Глава сорок первая.

Сергей не торопясь шел по бульвару (boulevard - avenue, promenade, drive, walkway - a wide city street often lined with trees). Хотя, он закончил рабочий день довольно рано, но для полноценной (full-fledged - complete, thorough, proper, comprehensive - fully developed or realized) экскурсии уже было довольно поздно. По этому, он решил просто погулять по городу, выйти на набережную Волги, и, возможно, зайти в кафе или ресторан.

Карта на смартфоне показывала, что бульвар как раз заканчивается у Петербургского шоссе, вдоль которого можно выйти на набережную.

Шоссе было не очень широким, но деревья по обе стороны шоссе закрывали бОльшую часть обзора (view - sight, visibility, perspective, outlook - the range of vision) того, что было на противоположной стороне.

Вдоль шоссе, на той стороне, где шел Сергей, были дома, в основном, не высокие, в два и в три этажа. Старые, но ухоженные. Это немного напоминало знакомый Сергею Санкт-Петербург или некоторые улочки (lanes - alleys, narrow streets, passages, backstreets - small or narrow urban roads) Москвы, где Маша и Сергей гуляли ещё совсем недавно.

Сергей сделал несколько фотографий наиболее живописных (picturesque - scenic, charming, photogenic, attractive - visually appealing or striking), по его мнению, домов, которые были вписаны в зелёную улицу.

Впереди, на противоположной стороне, из-за деревьев были видны современные многоэтажки (high-rises - apartment blocks, towers, skyscrapers, tall buildings - tall residential or office buildings with many floors). Которые, хоть и отличались друг от друга архитектурой, но всё равно, казались одинаковыми. Особенно, после ряда старых домов, которые не были похожи один на другой, но, тем не менее, были как часть целого замысла (design - plan, concept, vision, idea - an intentional or artistic arrangement or plan).

Старая архитектура сменялась на более новую, фасады (facades - fronts, exteriors, faces, surfaces - the outward appearance or front of a building) становились попроще, вдоль улицы шли бетонные заборы (fences - barriers, walls, enclosures, partitions - structures serving as boundaries or protection) и только зелень (greenery - foliage, vegetation, plants, leaves - green plants or foliage) деревьев разбавляла (diluted - softened, broke, relieved, lightened - made less intense or monotone) становящийся унылым (dreary - dull, gloomy, bleak, depressing - lacking brightness or cheer) вид улицы.

Над шоссе время от времени пролетали чайки, которые умудрялись (managed - succeeded, coped, contrived, figured out - were able to accomplish despite difficulty) перекрикивать (outshout - overpower, outvoice, drown out, overtalk - to be louder than something else) гул (roar - rumble, noise, hum, drone - a continuous loud sound) автомобилей. Значит река близко, подумал Сергей.

И действительно, скоро открылся вид на Волгу. Сергей был немного разочарован. Известная русская река, с которой связан большой кусок русской истории была в этом месте не слишком широкой, как представлял себе Сергей. Но, пожалуй, и не ручеёк (brook - stream, rivulet, creek, trickle - a small natural waterway). Возможно, метров двести.

От реки веяло (wafted - blew, drifted, floated, emanated - moved or spread gently through the air) прохладой (coolness - chill, breeze, freshness, crispness - a pleasantly low temperature), и вдоль набережной гулял ветер.

От улицы река была отделена (separated - enclosed, fenced, bordered, partitioned - kept apart by a barrier or boundary) решётчатой (grilled - latticed, barred, meshed, grated - having a pattern of crossed metal or wood strips) оградой (fence - railing, barrier, enclosure, balustrade - a structure serving as a boundary or guard) и каменными (stone - rocky, stony, solid, masonry - made of or resembling rock) столбами (pillars - posts, columns, supports, shafts - upright structures used for support or decoration). За оградой были видны: пологий (gentle - sloping, mild, gradual, easy - having a slight incline or decline) берег, скамейки (benches - seats, pews, stools, rests - long outdoor seats, typically for several people), беседки, детская площадка с горкой (slide - chute, ramp, slope, descent - a playground structure for sliding down) и качелями (swings - seats, gliders, rockers, seesaws - suspended seats for back-and-forth motion).

Судя по всему, это был городской пляж. И точно. Скоро, вдоль улицы, через ограду, появился песчаный (sandy - grainy, gritty, dusty, silty - covered with or containing sand) берег. Сергей подумал, что летом, тут, скорее всего, будет негде яблоку упасть, дети и взрослые будут заполнять собой пляж, будут загорать, купаться, шуметь…

Вот, в ограде пляжа появилась арка (arch - gate, vault, curve, portal - a curved structure forming an entrance) с воротами и калитками (wickets - gates, doors, entries, accessways - small gates or side entrances), на арке была надпись «Водная станция». За аркой была видна приподнятая (raised - elevated, lifted, uplifted, heightened - positioned above the surrounding area) над берегом огороженная площадка, которую огибали (encircled - surrounded, wrapped, bordered, bypassed - moved around in a curved path) закруглённые (rounded - curved, arched, circular, smooth-edged - shaped with smooth curves or arcs) лестницы, спускавшиеся к воде.

Дальше, песчаный берег сменился мощёной набережной.

Вскоре показался мост через Волгу.

Сергей не стал переходить по мосту на другой берег. Подождав, пока светофор разрешит переход, Сергей продолжил прогулку по набережной. Вскоре он подошел к небольшой площадке, на которой стояла скульптура (sculpture - statue, figure, monument, carving - a three-dimensional art object). Это был мужчина в старинной (old-fashioned - historical, vintage, antique, traditional - from or resembling a past time) одежде. Его взгляд был направлен поперёк реки. И туда же, в сторону реки от площадки была направлена (aimed - pointed, directed, turned, oriented - set to face a certain direction) носовая (bow - prow, front, forepart, head - the front end of a ship or boat) часть какого-то судна (vessel - ship, boat, craft, barge - a large watercraft used for transportation).

Сергей обошел статую и увидел табличку. Там было написано:

«Отважному (brave - courageous, daring, fearless, valiant - showing courage and determination) русскому путешественнику (traveler - explorer, voyager, adventurer, globetrotter - a person who journeys, especially to distant places) Афанасию Никитину в память о том, что он в 1469–1472 годах с дружественной целью посетил Индию».

О! Точно! Афанасий Никитин отправился в своё путешествие из Твери! Сергей улыбнулся, вспомнив уроки истории в школе. Это был один из немногих (few - rare, scarce, infrequent, limited - existing in small number or amount) предметов, который ему запомнился и понравился. Учительница, которая вела предмет, умела увлекательно (captivatingly - engagingly, interestingly, entertainingly, vividly - in a way that holds attention and interest) рассказывать об исторических событиях и всегда была готова помочь ученикам, если те забывали какое-то событие или дату.

Страшно подумать, насколько опасными могли быть путешествия в те годы! А Афанасию удалось побывать (visit - travel, explore, experience, attend - to go to and spend time in a place) и в Персии, и в Индии, и в Турецкой Османской (Ottoman - Turkish, imperial, sultanic, Middle Eastern - relating to the former Turkish empire) империи (empire - kingdom, realm, dominion, sovereignty - a large political unit with extensive territories under one rule), побывать в плену (captivity - imprisonment, bondage, confinement, detention - the state of being held or confined by force), стать образцом упорства (perseverance - determination, tenacity, persistence, endurance - continued effort despite difficulty or delay) в своей вере, собрать новые данные, которые, к сожалению, несколько столетий (centuries - eras, ages, periods, epochs - periods of 100 years) не были прочитаны. Обратно в Тверь он не смог вернуться, но он вернулся в Европу, а его записи обнаружились в XIX веке не далеко от Москвы.

Сергей немного постоял на площадке у памятника, посмотрел через реку. За рекой был какой-то парк с развлечениями и аттракционами (rides - amusements, entertainments, machines, spectacles - mechanical structures for fun in amusement parks), было видно колесо обозрения (ferris wheel - big wheel, observation wheel, panoramic wheel, fairground wheel - a large rotating upright wheel with passenger cars).

За неспешной (leisurely - unhurried, relaxed, calm, easygoing - acting or done without haste) прогулкой прошел почти час. И Сергей подумал, что неплохо бы зайти в кафе или ресторан.

Рядом с памятником Афанасию Никитину был какой-то ресторан, но, судя по всему, там шло какое-то гуляние (festivity - celebration, party, merrymaking, revelry - a joyful and lively event with music and entertainment), и музыка доносилась слишком громкая.

Сергей поискал в телефоне, есть ли ещё какое-то кафе поблизости. Так. Ещё один ресторан с живой музыкой, восточный ресторан, кафе-пекарня (café-bakery - coffeehouse, patisserie, tearoom, bakeshop - a place that serves both coffee and baked goods)… Вот, кафе «Сковородка», ещё одно, было неподалёку. То, что нужно простому командировочному специалисту: умеренные цены, вкусная еда, спокойная обстановка! Нужно было дойти до следующего моста, но не переходить через реку, а наоборот, свернуть налево. Интересно, что тут ещё есть по дороге в кафе? Ага, ботанический (botanical - horticultural, floral, plant-related, green - related to plants or plant science) сад… Нет, пожалуй, сейчас туда уже не стоит идти.

Теперь, когда Сергей направился к выбранной цели, он пошел бодрым шагом, подгоняемый (driven - urged, motivated, propelled, encouraged - moved or influenced to act by a thought or desire) мыслями о сырниках.

Кафе, как и в прошлый раз, было расположено в новом здании, в этот раз оно было из сэндвич-панелей (sandwich panels - composite panels, layered panels, prefabricated panels, insulation panels - construction elements made of layered materials for insulation and strength), над кафе был тренажёрный (gym - fitness, workout, training, exercise - a place equipped for physical training) зал, а по соседству (next door - nearby, adjacent, close by, neighboring - located very near or beside) со «Сковородкой» было кафе-бургерная (burger café - burger joint, fast food café, grill bar, diner - a place serving burgers and fast food in a casual setting).

«Очень удобно!» Подумал Сергей, представив как худеющие (slimming - dieting, reducing, trimming, losing weight - trying to become thinner) к лету женщины, и мужчины спешно (hurriedly - quickly, hastily, rapidly, briskly - in a fast or rushed manner) наращивающие (building up - developing, increasing, growing, expanding - making something stronger or larger) мускулы, и убирающие животы, сразу после тренировки спускаются в кафе, и набивают (stuffing - filling, cramming, gorging, overloading - eating until full or overfull) желудки сдобными (rich - buttery, fatty, sweet, soft - made with plenty of fat, sugar, or eggs) сырниками в сметане и жирными бургерами (burgers - sandwiches, patties, cheeseburgers, beefburgers - grilled meat served in a bun, usually with toppings). Вероятно, из-за собственного проснувшегося аппетита, Сергею эта сцена, на «внутреннем экране», в голове, представилась гротескной (grotesque - absurd, exaggerated, surreal, bizarre - strangely distorted or exaggerated in appearance or character), как в старинных мультиках.

Сергею повезло, в кафе ещё было не очень много людей, он ополоснул руки в туалете и подошел на линию раздачи. Он кинул взгляд на всё что предлагалось, и в конце линии он внезапно встретился взглядом с солнечно-рыжей девушкой, которую уже видел в прошлый раз, в той «Сковородке», где перекусывал (had a snack - grabbed a bite, nibbled, ate lightly, snacked - ate a small or quick meal) впервые.
