Чертовщина (damn it - damn, darn, hell, shit - an expression of annoyance or frustration)…

Когда я был маленьким, я любил ходить в музеи. Наверное, больше, чем кто-либо из моих сверстников (peers - contemporaries, coevals, equals, age group - a person of the same age, status, or ability as another specified person). Я был и в Политехническом музее, и в Геологическом, и в Биологическом. Мне нравилось видеть, как устроены машины, недра (depths - bowels, interior, subsurface, underground - the inner parts of the earth), и даже живые существа.

Я никогда не падал в обморок (faint - black out, pass out, lose consciousness, swoon - a sudden loss of consciousness) от вида крови или порезов (cuts - lacerations, incisions, gashes, wounds - a wound made by cutting, especially with a sharp object), или когда у меня брали кровь из вены (vein - blood vessel, artery, capillary - a tube that carries blood to the heart from the other parts of the body) для анализов.

Даже когда я служил в армии, мне пришлось некоторое время заменять фельдшера (replace the paramedic - substitute for the medic, stand in for the medical assistant, cover for the orderly, fill in for the corpsman - to take the place or perform the duties of a medical orderly). Это было не официально – у меня не было никакого медицинского образования, а по необходимости. Просто потому, что больше некому (no one else - nobody else, no other person, not anyone, no alternative - no other person available or qualified to do something) было. И я проводил мелкие хирургические (surgical - operative, medical, clinical, operative - relating to or used in surgery) действия – мог зашить рану (stitch up a wound - suture a laceration, sew up a cut, close a gash, repair an incision - to close a wound with stitches) простой хлопчатобумажной нитью (thread - string, filament, fiber, strand - a long, thin strand of cotton, nylon, or other fibers used in sewing or surgery) (что, конечно, плохо, но ничего другого под рукой не было) или сделать перевязку (bandaging - dressing a wound, applying a bandage, wrapping, binding - the act of applying a bandage or dressing to a wound).…

Если бы я не был таким балбесом и лентяем (blockhead and lazybones - dunce and slacker, fool and idler, dolt and layabout, simpleton and sluggard - a foolish and lazy person), я бы пошел в медицину, и был бы если не хирургом (surgeon - operating doctor, surgical specialist, operative surgeon, sawbones - a medical practitioner qualified to practice surgery), то, возможно, патологоанатомом (pathologist - medical examiner, coroner, forensic pathologist, mortician - a doctor who examines dead bodies to determine the cause of death).

С тех пор прошло много лет, я дважды побывал под скальпелем (scalpel - surgical knife, lancet, blade, cutter - a knife with a small, sharp, sometimes detachable blade, used by a surgeon) хирурга, мне делали перевязки, переливания (transfusions - infusion, transfer, administration, introduction - the process of transferring blood or other fluids into a person's bloodstream) крови и других жидкостей, и прочие кровавые манипуляции (bloody procedures - gory interventions, sanguinary operations, bloody treatments, invasive measures - medical procedures that involve bloodshed) с моим телом. У меня это никогда не вызывало отвращения (disgust - revulsion, repugnance, loathing, nausea - a feeling of intense dislike or distaste), а только всё то же любопытство (конечно, если я не был под наркозом (anesthesia - general anesthetic, sedation, numbness, unconsciousness - insensitivity to pain, especially as artificially induced by the administration of gases or the injection of drugs before surgery) в это время).

Так вот, после последней операции мне нужна была помощь хирурга для ухода за областью вмешательства (intervention - surgical site, operation area, affected area, incision site - the area where a surgical procedure was performed) – осмотреть результаты, оценить заживление (healing - recovery, mending, recuperation, convalescence - the process of becoming sound or healthy again) и главное – откачать (drain - pump out, extract, suction, remove - to draw off or remove a liquid from a cavity or area) жидкость, которая образовывалась в полости (cavity - hollow space, pocket, void, chamber - an empty space within a solid object). В груди, из которой удалили узел – кусок молочной железы (gland - mammary gland, organ, secretory organ, node - an organ in the body which secretes particular chemical substances for use in the body or for discharge into the surroundings).

Пока я был в больнице, сразу после операции, весь уход делался или тем же врачом, который меня оперировал (operated on - performed surgery on, conducted an operation on, did surgery, carried out the procedure - to perform a surgical procedure on someone), или медсестрой. И никаких проблем с этим не возникало.

Через пару дней после операции, доктор сказал мне, что моё пребывание (stay - sojourn, period of hospitalization, time spent, occupancy - the period of time during which someone remains in a hospital as a patient) в больнице больше не обязательно, и обрабатывать (treat - clean, disinfect, dress, care for - to apply medical care or antiseptic to a wound) рану могут специалисты в любой поликлинике (polyclinic - outpatient clinic, health center, medical center, doctor's office - a clinic or hospital where a variety of healthcare services are provided without overnight stay).

Отлично. Хотя я несколько сомневался в этом. Так как опыт работы хирурга в поликлинике и больнице совершенно разный. Но находиться в больнице было скучновато. И к тому же, я предпочитал кровать с жестким матрасом. На мягком у меня начинала болеть спина.

Я записался на прием в одну из местных поликлиник.

У хирурга была арабская, русифицированная (Arab, Russified - Arabic, Russianized, adapted to Russian, Slavicized - of Arabic origin but modified to fit Russian linguistic or cultural norms) фамилия, это означало, что он либо из российской республики с преимущественно мусульманским (predominantly Muslim - mainly Islamic, mostly Muslim, largely Mohammedan, primarily Moslem - having a population that is mostly followers of the Islamic religion) населением, либо из бывших советских республик Средней Азии (Центральной Азии), либо из Закавказья. Это немного настораживало, так как там иногда бывает такая ситуация, когда диплом врача просто покупают, или подкупая (bribing - corrupting, paying off, greasing palms, buying off - to dishonestly persuade someone to act in one's favor by a gift of money or other inducement) преподавателей, или оформляют вообще без учебы, проставляя (studying, putting in - education, entering, inserting, marking - the process of gaining knowledge; to record or input something, often fraudulently) необходимые отметки (grades - marks, scores, evaluations, assessments - a particular level of rank, quality, proficiency, intensity, or value) об учебе «задним числом». Но для работы в обычной городской поликлинике это не имеет смысла, так как зарплата обычного врача не окупит затраты на взятки (recoup the costs of bribes - cover the bribery expenses, repay the corruption costs, offset the payoff expenditures, recover the graft outlay - to earn back the money spent on illegal payments to secure favors) для получения диплома.

Как бы то ни было, дата была выбрана, а времени на ожидание приёма у другого врача у меня не было. Обрабатывать место операции нужно регулярно.

К назначенному времени, я приехал в район Котельники и без особого труда нашел поликлинику.
Подошло моё время, и я вошел в кабинет врача.

Доктор-хирург (surgeon - operating doctor, surgical specialist, operative surgeon, sawbones - a medical practitioner qualified to practice surgery) – довольно молодой чеченец или ингуш (Chechen or Ingush - from Chechnya or Ingushetia, Vainakh, North Caucasian, from the Caucasus - a person belonging to the ethnic groups originating from the North Caucasus regions of Chechnya or Ingushetia). У него были светлые жесткие волосы и борода (beard - facial hair, whiskers, stubble, goatee - a growth of hair on the chin and lower cheeks of a man's face), с оттенком рыжего. Спортивного телосложения, но не похож на бодибилдера, скорее на боксера или борца (wrestler - grappler, fighter, martial artist, contender - a person who takes part in the sport of wrestling) в не тяжелом весе. Тем более, что на руках, на костяшках (diminutive of костяшка, full form: костяшка пальца; knuckles - joints, finger bones, metacarpophalangeal joints, fists - the protruding joints of the fingers, especially when the hand is clenched) пальцев были мозоли, характерные для людей, которые часто занимаются карате – тренируют удары по твёрдому или отжимаются (something hard or do push-ups - firm surfaces or perform push-ups, unyielding objects or do press-ups, hard materials or do floor dips, solid things or do pumping iron - to practice strikes against solid objects or to exercise by raising and lowering the body with the arms while keeping the back straight) на кулаках. Мне показалось это странным: хирург занимается спортом, который мало соответствует его профессии, где нужна точность движений пальцев, а не твёрдость (hardness - firmness, rigidity, solidity, stiffness - the quality or state of being solid and resistant to pressure; not easily deformed) сжатого кулака.

А медсестрой у него была бабулечка (diminutive of бабуля, full form: бабушка; little granny - old lady, elderly woman, grandma, senior nurse - an affectionate term for an elderly woman, often implying kindness and age), которой на вид можно было дать лет, наверное, восемьдесят. Это тоже меня удивило, редко, кто в таком возрасте продолжает работать.

Я поздоровался, и чтобы не рассказывать всё, просто протянул доктору выписку (discharge summary - medical report, extract, statement, release papers - an official document from a hospital detailing a patient's treatment and condition upon release), которую получил в больнице. Там было описано, что со мной делали и как.

Доктор читал довольно подробно, это было видно по направлению его взгляда, который последовательно перемещался (moved sequentially - progressed methodically, advanced systematically, proceeded step by step, went in order - to move from one point to the next in a logical or ordered fashion) по строчкам.

Доктор только успел опустить лист на стол, как тут же со своего места и, подходя ко мне, начала бабулечка: «Что вам нужно делать?» Тут же, будто очнувшись, продолжил доктор: «Снимите рубашку».

Я расстегнул (unbuttoned - unfastened, opened, undid, loosened - to open the fastening of a garment, typically a button) рубашку, и ко мне тут же, очень резво (briskly - energetically, spryly, lively, agilely - in an active, quick, and energetic manner), подскочила (darted over - rushed up, sprang forward, hopped over, bounded towards - to move suddenly and quickly towards something or someone) бабулечка. Она была не большого роста, возможно, 160 сантиметров или даже меньше.

Я стал показывать и рассказывать… Что у меня была операция, что у меня удалили узел в молочной железе, и что теперь, нужно откачивать (pump out - drain, extract, suction, remove - to draw off or remove a liquid from a cavity or area) жидкость – кровь и лимфу (lymph - lymphatic fluid, interstitial fluid, body fluid, plasma - a colorless fluid containing white blood cells, which bathes the tissues and drains through the lymphatic system into the bloodstream), которые скапливаются (accumulate - gather, collect, amass, build up - to gather together or acquire an increasing number or quantity of) в кармане, на месте удаленного (removed - excised, extracted, taken out, cut out - taken away or off from the position occupied) фрагмента.

И пока я это делал, эта бабулечка схватила меня за грудь, и начала её давить, мять, выкручивать, (knead, twist - squeeze, crush, wring, contort - to press and squeeze with the hands; to turn or bend into a curved or angular shape) как будто пытаясь выдавить скопившуюся (squeeze out the accumulated - express the collected, force out the gathered, press out the built-up, extract the pooled - to apply pressure to force a collected liquid to come out) жидкость наружу, через затягивающийся шов. (healing suture - closing incision, mending stitch, sealing cut, knitting wound - a stitch or series of stitches used to hold the edges of a wound together while it heals).

Это было не столько больно или оскорбительно (offensive - insulting, humiliating, degrading, disrespectful - causing someone to feel deeply hurt, upset, or angry), сколько бессмысленно (pointless - futile, senseless, useless, in vain - having no purpose or reason) и вредно (harmful - damaging, detrimental, injurious, deleterious - causing or likely to cause damage).

Я одёрнул (jerked away - pulled back, snapped back, recoiled, flinched - to make a quick, sharp, sudden movement away from something) её: «Осторожнее! Это не прыщ (pimple - zit, blemish, blackhead, acne - a small inflamed elevation of the skin; a papule or pustule), чтобы его выдавливать (squeeze - pop, express, extract, press - to apply pressure to something to force substance out)!»

Она отдернула (jerked back - pulled back, snatched away, recoiled, flinched - to quickly move something away, especially a part of the body) руку. Но лицо у неё было довольное и смущенное (embarrassed - abashed, ashamed, self-conscious, discomfited - feeling or showing embarrassment), как у подростка, которому удалось схватить девушку за грудь. Не столько из-за эротизма (eroticism - sexual desire, arousal, sensuality, lust - a state of sexual excitement or desire) ситуации, сколько из шалости (mischief - playfulness, naughtiness, impishness, roguishness - playful misbehavior or troublemaking, especially in children).

Доктор всё это время пребывал в полусонном (was in a semi-conscious - existed in a drowsy state, remained half-asleep, stayed groggy, lingered in a stupor - to be in a state between sleeping and waking) состоянии, не спал, но реагировал на всё слишком спокойно, как будто отрешенно (detached - aloof, indifferent, disconnected, dispassionate - showing a lack of emotional involvement or interest).

Потом медсестра сказала доктору, что у меня нужно откачать жидкость из полости. Доктор на мгновение очнулся, и повторил как попугай (parrot - mimic, copycat, echo, imitator - to repeat or imitate, especially without understanding): «Вам нужно откачать жидкость…?»

Я подтвердил.

Мы пошли в комнату для хирургических операций и перевязок. Я снял рубашку полностью.

Доктор надел перчатки (gloves - surgical gloves, latex gloves, examination gloves, protective gloves - a covering for the hand worn for protection against disease or contamination). Медсестра подала доктору шприц, а сама стала протирать мне место будущего прокола (puncture - injection site, needle stick, perforation, stab - a small hole made by a sharp point, especially by a needle) спиртом, обильно поливая салфетку и отжимая излишки (wringing out the excess - squeezing out the surplus, pressing out the extra, twisting out the leftover, extracting the remainder - to twist and compress something to remove liquid) спирта на пол.

Я сидел на краю кровати. Доктор примерился и проколол (took aim and punctured - aimed and pierced, lined up and stabbed, targeted and perforated, focused and pricked - to position oneself carefully and then make a hole with a sharp instrument) кожу и жир. С первого раза попасть в нужное место у него не получилось, он попробовал ещё дважды и наконец нашел направление и глубину, откуда можно было откачивать… Такую процедуру я проходил уже несколько раз, и поэтому отметил насколько большая разница в опыте у врачей и медсестёр в больнице, где операции делают каждый день, и у рядового (ordinary - average, common, regular, typical - with no special or distinctive features; normal) хирурга из обычной городской поликлиники.

Я смотрел на его действия, согнув (bending - tilting, angling, bowing, crooking - to curve or angle something, especially a part of the body) шею, чтобы внимательно рассмотреть, и мне хотелось его подправить (correct him - adjust his technique, guide him, show him the right way, instruct him - to make something right or accurate that was wrong). Но я не стал ему говорить под руку, и просто ждал, когда всё закончится. Никаких особенных ощущений у меня не было, боль от прокола была незначительной (insignificant - minor, slight, negligible, trivial - too small or unimportant to be worth consideration).

И вот, когда процедура уже почти подошла к концу, старушка – «божий одуванчик» (diminutive, full form: божий одуванчик; God's dandelion - harmless old soul, sweet old thing, elderly innocent, gentle senior - an affectionate and slightly ironic term for a harmless, naive, or frail elderly person) спросила меня: «Вам нехорошо?»

Я ответил: «Нет, всё нормально!» Я поднял голову. И понял, что не могу больше пошевелиться (move - budge, stir, shift, twitch - to make a movement; to change position) самостоятельно, как будто я окоченел или заледенел (frozen stiff or turned to ice - became rigid, stiffened up, numbed, petrified - to become completely motionless, often from cold or shock), и что на глаза опускается серая вуаль (veil - curtain, film, haze, mist - something that conceals, obscures, or disguises, like a thin covering), звуки постепенно пропали, и я почувствовал, что начал падать вбок (to the side - sideways, laterally, obliquely, athwart - towards a direction perpendicular to the front or back). Последнее что помню, что меня пытается удержать доктор.

Когда я начал приходить в себя, то обнаружил, что лежу на операционной кровати, пытаюсь проснуться, но получалось очень плохо.

Спустя какое-то время я услышал, что меня зовёт (calling - summoning, hailing, addressing, shouting for - to say something in a loud voice to attract attention) медсестра. Я начал отвечать, что всё в порядке, что я уже пришел в себя. И только в этот момент бабулечка стала суетиться (fuss - bustle, flutter, hustle, dash about - to behave or act in a nervous, restless, or anxious way), чтобы дать мне понюхать нашатырный (smell ammonia - inhale smelling salts, get a whiff of ammonium hydroxide, sniff spirits of hartshorn, take in aromatic spirits - to inhale the fumes of ammonia, used as a stimulant to counteract fainting) спирт. Я возражал: «Не нужно нашатыря (diminutive of нашатырный спирт, full form: нашатырный спирт; ammonia - smelling salts, spirits of hartshorn, ammonium hydroxide - a pungent gas dissolved in water, used as a stimulant and restorative)! Уже всё в порядке!» Я не был в порядке. Задохнуться от рвоты (choke on vomit - suffocate from puke, asphyxiate on sick, gag on throw-up, drown in regurgitation - to have vomit block the airway, preventing breathing) в кабинете хирурга мне не хотелось. И это помогло мне собраться. Но медсестра всё же успела открыть нашатырный спирт. Я накричал (yelled - shouted, snapped, barked, scolded - to speak or cry out loudly and forcefully, often in anger) на неё. Она убрала кусок салфетки, смоченный нашатырём (soaked with ammonia - dampened with smelling salts, moistened with ammonium hydroxide, drenched in spirits of hartshorn, wet with aromatic spirits - thoroughly wet with a solution of ammonia), и открыла окно.

Я встал и несколько минут просто сидел. Это было похоже на «грогги» ("groggy" - dazed, stupefied, woozy, befuddled - dazed, weak, or unsteady, especially from illness, intoxication, sleep, or a blow) у боксёра – человек сидит или стоит, не падает, но ничего не соображает, как пьяный (drunk - intoxicated, inebriated, tipsy, soused - affected by alcohol to the extent of losing control of one's faculties or behavior). Медсестра вышла из операционной комнаты. Через некоторое время туман в голове рассеялся (cleared - dissipated, lifted, faded, vanished - to become dispersed or dissipated, and so disappear) достаточно, и я смог встать и одеться.

Из операционной комнаты я перешел в кабинет.

Доктор просто сидел и смотрел в монитор. Когда я вошел, он снова, как будто, очнулся, когда медсестра посмотрела в его сторону. Он начал что-то стучать на клавиатуре.

По привычке, я поблагодарил врача и медсестру, забрал со стола свой лист выписки и стал собираться, чтобы выйти из кабинета.

Старушка очень мило мне улыбалась, провожая взглядом. Вид у неё был почему-то довольный.

Голова всё ещё соображала туго. Я подумал, что падать в обморок снова - лучше внутри поликлиники, чем на улице, и решил немного походить (walk around - stroll, amble, wander, pace - to move about on foot for a short time) по коридору, пока голова не прояснится окончательно, чтобы можно было возвращаться домой без опасений (fear - apprehension, worry, concern, trepidation - an unpleasant emotion caused by the threat of danger, pain, or harm) упасть где-нибудь на перекрёстке.

Мне не давала покоя мысль о причине, почему я упал в обморок. Как любой человек, не склонный к суевериям (prone to superstitions - inclined to believe in superstitions, given to irrational beliefs, disposed to magical thinking, tending to be superstitious - having a natural tendency or inclination to believe in supernatural influences), и вообще атеист (atheist - non-believer, skeptic, disbeliever, irreligious person - a person who disbelieves or lacks belief in the existence of God or gods), я стал искать рациональное (rational - logical, reasonable, sensible, sound - based on or in accordance with reason or logic) объяснение. И пришел к мысли, что, скорее всего, из-за моего остеохондроза, плохой осанки просто был пережат сосуд (blood vessel - vein, artery, capillary, tube - a tubular structure carrying blood through the tissues and organs) питающий мозг. И что, да, такое бывает иногда, и похоже на то, как у людей темнеет в глазах, когда они резко встают из сидячего (sitting - seated, sedentary, stationary, inactive - the posture of resting on the buttocks or haunches) положения, особенно, если сидели долго или сидели на корточках (squatting - crouching, hunkering, hunkering down, stooping - to crouch or sit with the knees bent and the heels close to or touching the buttocks).

Я вышел из поликлиники на свежий воздух и прошел пару сотен метров, вспоминая случившееся.

Я подумал, что эта пара – доктор, который вел себя как кукла, управляемая извне (from the outside - externally, from outside, by an external force, by outside influence - originating or situated outside the limits of something), и старушка, резвая (sprightly - lively, energetic, vigorous, agile - active and full of energy) не по возрасту, сильно напоминают пару из кино или мифа, где есть вечноживущий колдун (eternally living sorcerer - immortal wizard, undying magician, everlasting warlock, perpetual enchanter - a male magic-user who lives forever), ведьма или вампир и его помощник - фамильяр (familiar - spirit companion, imp, demon, attendant - a spirit often embodied in an animal, that serves a witch or magician), и по совместительству донор (concurrently a donor - also a giver, simultaneously a provider, additionally a supplier, likewise a contributor - fulfilling the role of a donor at the same time as another role), управляемый этим волшебником (sorcerer - wizard, magician, enchanter, warlock - a person who claims or is believed to have magic powers).

Мне захотелось немедленно вернуться и спросить старушку об этом напрямую, в лоб. Но меня охватила паника (panic seized me - was overcome by panic, was gripped by fear, was overwhelmed by terror, was consumed by dread - a sudden overwhelming feeling of fear and anxiety). Мне больше не хотелось отключаться. Не только из-за шанса снова упасть в обморок и получить туман в голове, но и из-за паршивого (lousy - awful, terrible, rotten, miserable - very poor or bad) самочувствия во всём теле, которое ещё не прошло до конца. Да и сама эта попытка (attempt - effort, endeavor, try, venture - an act of trying to achieve something, typically without success) казалась мне сумасшедшей.

Я ещё несколько раз задавался такой мыслью - сходить узнать, кто такая эта старушка на самом деле. Но к тому времени, когда моё самочувствие окончательно поправилось, я с удивлением понял, что могу вспомнить довольно точно, как выглядит доктор, но ничего не могу вспомнить о бабулечке, кроме того, что она весьма пожилая и маленького роста. Её лицо полностью стёрлось (erased - faded, vanished, disappeared, blurred - to remove all traces of something; to become indistinct) из памяти, и каждый раз, когда я напрягался (strained - exerted myself, made an effort, concentrated, focused - to make a strenuous or unusually great effort), чтобы вспомнить её, сознание рисовало мне каждый раз разные образы. Постоянными в воспоминаниях оставались только рост, возраст и то, что волосы были вроде бы тёмные, скорее всего, крашеные (dyed - colored, tinted, bleached, treated - having had the color changed by artificial means). Теперь, спустя неделю, этот эпизод уже не столь (so - as, to such an extent, to that degree, that - to the same extent or degree; used in comparisons) ярок в воспоминаниях.

Но мне не даёт покоя она мысль. Мысль, с которой усердно пытается спорить моя материалистическая (materialistic - physical, worldly, secular, empirical - relating to the belief that nothing exists except matter and its movements and modifications) часть сознания. Мысль о том, что колдовство и волшебство (sorcery and magic - witchcraft, wizardry, enchantment, thaumaturgy - the use of magic, especially black magic; the power of apparently influencing events by using mysterious or supernatural forces) существуют в нашем мире. И, похоже, не так уж сильно прячутся.

Вероятно, им помогает вся современная технология и информационная перенасыщенность. (oversaturation - information overload, excessive saturation, data glut, superabundance - the state of being filled beyond normal capacity, especially with information). Когда всё что угодно можно назвать правдой, а всё неугодное (undesirable - unwanted, unwelcome, unacceptable, disagreeable - not wanted or desired because harmful, offensive, or unattractive) объявить фейком (fake - counterfeit, forged, false, sham - not genuine; imitation or counterfeit), цифровым фантомом (phantom - ghost, illusion, specter, apparition - a figment of the imagination; an illusion or apparition) и для каждого случая предъявить (present - produce, show, display, provide - to show or offer something for others to scrutinize or consider) доказательства, Доказательства, которые, возможно, стали существовать только десять минут назад.

Возможно, я наберусь храбрости, (pluck up courage - muster courage, summon up bravery, gather nerve, steel oneself - to make an effort to overcome one's fear or reluctance) и попробую навестить (visit - call on, drop in on, go to see, pay a visit to - to go to see and spend time with someone socially) того врача. Хотя бы для того, чтобы посмотреть, всё ли в порядке с ним.
