Глава пятьдесят седьмая

Больше интересных для Марии разговоров не получилось: женщины перешли на нерабочие (non-work - personal, informal, casual, social - not related to job duties) темы, обсуждали планы на вечер или выходные.

Мария раскладывала (was laying out - spreading out, arranging, sorting, organizing - to arrange things in a particular order) накладные (invoices - bills, shipping documents, waybills, bills of lading - documents listing goods sent or services provided) и акты приёма передачи, сравнивала даты, время, цифры объёмов (volumes - quantities, amounts, capacity, bulk - the amount of space a substance occupies) загруженного (loaded - filled, packed, freighted, laden - put goods or materials onto a vehicle or into a container) и отгруженного (shipped - dispatched, sent off, delivered, consigned - sent goods to a customer). Проверяла отметки, когда данные перенесли в учётную (accounting - record-keeping, bookkeeping, registry, system - related to the system for recording financial transactions) систему. Но никаких бросающихся (striking - conspicuous, obvious, glaring, noticeable - immediately very noticeable) в глаза отличий, за которые можно было бы уцепиться, не было.

Как же так выходило, что именно в этом филиале потери перевозимого (transported - carried, conveyed, shipped, hauled - taken from one place to another) топлива почти всегда достигали предела допустимого (permissible - allowable, acceptable, tolerated, approved - within the limits of what is allowed)?

После сотни проверенных листов в глазах зарябило (got blurry/dotted - became speckled, swam, saw spots, got fuzzy - vision became impaired from strain, seeing small spots). В этот момент она пожалела, что не курит, как некоторые сотрудники. У них была своего рода привилегия (privilege - prerogative, advantage, right, benefit - a special right or advantage available only to a particular person or group) — бросить все дела и уйти на перекур. Все считали это уважительной (valid - good, legitimate, justifiable, acceptable - a reason that is accepted as a good excuse) причиной, чтобы размять (stretch - flex, loosen up, exercise, work out - to move muscles to relieve stiffness) затёкшую (stiff - numb, asleep, cramped, tingling - muscles becoming stiff from lack of movement) спину и сделать несколько сотен шагов до помещения или площадки на улице, где можно пускать струи (streams - jets, plumes, flows, columns - a narrow flow of liquid or gas) дыма, играть дымными кольцами и на время позабыть о нудной (tedious - boring, monotonous, dull, tiresome - too long, slow, or dull; tiresome) работе.

Мария отвернулась от экрана ноутбука, откинулась на спинку кресла и сильно потянулась, прогибая (arching - bending, curving, bowing, flexing - to curve the back) спину и расправляя (straightening - expanding, puffing out, opening up, squaring - to make the chest broad and straight) грудь. «Нужно будет завести (get - acquire, buy, obtain, start using - to acquire something for oneself) себе вейп без никотина, чтобы уходить с ним на перекур (smoking break - break for a smoke, cig break, smoke break - a short break from work to smoke). Только подобрать какой-нибудь не очень „химический“ (chemical - artificial, synthetic, unnatural, lab-made - tasting or smelling artificial, like chemicals) аромат», — подумала Мария, глядя, как пара девушек вышла из комнаты, демонстративно (demonstratively - conspicuously, pointedly, overtly, showily - in a manner intended to attract notice) держа сигареты.

Мария посмотрела в окно. Погода снова менялась. Вчерашний ливень и тучи сегодня, в середине дня, сменились ясным небом и маревом (heat haze - mirage, shimmer, glare, steam - shimmering in the air over a hot surface) над мокрой землёй. А сейчас, ближе к вечеру, небо снова становилось непрозрачным, серым, потерявшим глубину, плоским (flat - two-dimensional, lifeless, dull, featureless - lacking depth and dimension), как потолок в старом заброшенном здании…

Мария вернулась к бумагам в надежде найти зацепку.

«Нужно будет затребовать ещё документы с нефтебазы (oil depot - oil terminal, fuel storage, tank farm - a facility for storing petroleum products), — подумала Мария. — Завтра посмотрю подробнее. Нет! Ничего не выйдет — завтра суббота, в офисе никого не будет, кроме охраны».

Она понимала: дело не из лёгких. Но была готова идти до конца.

День как-то закончился без видимого (visible - noticeable, apparent, evident, perceptible - able to be seen or noticed) результата. Только выйдя на улицу, Мария наконец переключилась. «Ого, я какой-то работаголик (workaholic - work enthusiast, busy bee, hard worker - a person who compulsively works hard and long hours) сегодня! А ведь меня ждёт Серёжа!»

Она помахала новым знакомым и достала телефон. Нашла в списке Сергея, позвонила. Сергей сразу взял трубку, словно ждал её звонка, не выпуская телефон из рук.

— Серёжа, привет! Я тут заработалась. Погуляем? Покажешь город, поужинаем (have dinner - dine, eat supper, grab a bite, get something to eat - to eat the evening meal)?
— Привет! — Голос у Сергея был радостный. — Конечно! Правда гид из меня не очень, я здесь лишь на неделю дольше тебя. Только куда подойти, где тебя искать?

— Ой, точно! Вот я умница-красавица! — В голосе Марии звучала самоирония (self-irony - self-deprecation, self-mockery, laughing at oneself - the ability to laugh at oneself). — Не сказала тебе адрес моего офиса!
Она хотела найти записанный адрес в телефоне, потом, мысленно хлопнув (slapping - smacking, hitting, striking - a figurative expression for self-reproach for a mistake) себя по лбу, повернулась к зданию. Но табличка с адресом на углу была скрыта деревьями. Сделав несколько шагов, Мария разглядела прогалину (gap - opening, clearing, break, space - an open space in a forest or between trees) в кронах и прочла вслух:
— Бульвар Шмидта, дом 4А, дробь 22.

— Ага, ясно! — откликнулся (responded - replied, answered, retorted - to say something in reply) Сергей. — Сейчас. — Было слышно, как он стучит по клавиатуре.
— Так, я сейчас поеду в твоём направлении — это займёт примерно 20 минут. Но, если хочешь, можешь не торопясь пойти к набережной, и мы там встретимся. Только скажи какой-нибудь ориентир (landmark - reference point, marker, guide, point of interest - a recognizable object used for navigation), который будет виден издалека.

Стоять на месте или прохаживаться вокруг закрытого офисного здания Марии не хотелось — это было скучно. К тому же ей не терпелось снова увидеть Сергея.

— Да, конечно! — воскликнула Маша. — Давай встретимся на набережной!
— Отлично, уже выхожу! — Сергей тоже был рад, голос выдавал его с головой.

Офисный дух окончательно выветрился из головы Маши. Настроение сменилось с напряжённого, озабоченного (preoccupied - worried, concerned, troubled, absorbed - thinking deeply or anxiously about something) на радостное — ожидание и предвкушение чего-то прекрасного. — Простите, подскажите (could you tell me - can you direct me, please show me the way, how do I get to - a polite request for directions), как пройти к набережной? — Мария обратилась к немолодому мужчине, который тоже выходил из офиса и направлялся в сторону бульвара.
— Это рядом! Если пойдёте налево и повернёте (turn - make a turn, change direction, take a left/right - to change direction when moving) на втором перекрёстке налево, то примерно через семьсот  метров выйдете на набережную, там будет ресторан. Если повернёте направо, то тоже на втором перекрёстке, но направо, через семьсот  метров будет набережная, вход в парк и смотровая (viewing - observation, lookout, scenic - a place designed to give a good view) площадка.
— Большое спасибо! — Мария на ходу помахала мужчине и пошла к парку на набережной. Потом остановилась и отправила Сергею сообщение: «Иду к парку и смотровой площадке».

Она перешла бульвар. На другой стороне стояло многоэтажное жилое здание, а за ним, вдоль бульвара, уже тянулись небольшие частные домики самого разного дизайна и конструкции.

Москва тоже не была однородной (homogeneous - uniform, consistent, monolithic, unvaried - of the same kind; alike) — в ней встречались места и с более контрастным (contrasting - stark, striking, clashing, differing - differing strikingly) смешением архитектурных стилей. Но Мария почему-то не ожидала такого от Твери.

Миновав несколько перекрёстков и пешеходный переход, Мария вышла к смотровой площадке. Настроение у погоды было переменчивым – низкие серые облака растворились (dissolved - dispersed, vanished, melted away, cleared - disappeared or vanished) и вечернее солнце вновь сияло желтоватым светом. Мария достала из сумки платок и быстро повязала его под подбородок. На площадку из-за спины Марии кто-то выбежал. Она повернулась и увидела молодого человека, который озирался (was looking around - glancing around, surveying the area, scanning, checking - looking in all directions) по сторонам.

— Сергей! — негромко (quietly - softly, in a low voice, faintly, under one's breath - not loudly) крикнула Мария. — Я здесь!

— Привет! Вот и ты! — Сергей подбежал, обнял, обхватив за плечи, и мягко прижал Марию к себе…
