Срок годности (expiry - validity, shelf life, durability, lifespan - the length of time for which an item remains usable, good, or valid) веры.

Каждое утро, вставая с постели, чтобы пойти на кухню и выпить свою обычную утреннюю чашку кофе, я невольно смотрел на полку в шкафу. Там, за стеклом, была стопка лекарств. Лекарства, которые когда-то были куплены и мне не подошли. Коробочки из тонкого картона, пластиковые баночки, наполовину пустые блистеры (blisters - bubble packs, strips, packets - a plastic packaging with individual cavities for pills) без всякой упаковки… У каких-то были неприятные или опасные побочные (side - adverse, secondary, unintended, peripheral - secondary and usually undesirable effects) действия, какие-то были просто невыносимы (unbearable - intolerable, insufferable, overwhelming, excruciating - too unpleasant or severe to endure). Некоторые вообще не принесли никакого результата, как плацебо (placebo - dummy pill, sugar pill, inactive substance - a substance with no therapeutic effect used as a control in testing).

Срок хранения у них уже истёк (expired - run out, lapsed, ended, terminated - to reach the end of its period of validity). Но я не стал их выбрасывать (throw away - discard, dispose of, get rid of, dump - to get rid of something as worthless). Они оставались у меня как напоминание (reminder - memento, souvenir, token, memorial - something that causes someone to remember something). Как приношение (offering - sacrifice, oblation, donation, contribution - something presented as a gift or sacrifice, especially in a religious context). Эта полка с лекарствами была как алтарь.

Иногда археологи находят следы городов и поселений (settlements - villages, hamlets, communities, colonies - places where people establish a community), которые были заброшены и занесены песком тысячи лет назад. Они исследуют остатки материальной культуры. Горшки (pots - vessels, jars, containers, crocks - rounded containers used for holding liquids or cooking), украшения (decorations - ornaments, adornments, embellishments, trinkets - items used to make something look more attractive), таблички с надписями – всё что может рассказать о людях того времени. Почти всегда находят что-то, что не несло никакой очевидной и полезной функции, кроме олицетворения (personification - embodiment, incarnation, epitome, symbol - the representation of a thing or abstraction in the form of a person) веры тех людей. В своего бога или богов, в дух реки или в повелителя молний. Это мог быть небольшой алтарь в жилище, или большой алтарь для всех, в храме или под открытым небом. И люди всегда что-то приносили в жертву своей вере. Чтобы божество (deity - god, divinity, immortal, supreme being - a god or goddess) не разгневалось (become angry - get enraged, be infuriated, be wrathful, be incensed - to make or become angry) или было особенно добро к жертвователю (donor - giver, benefactor, contributor, patron - a person who donates something). Чтобы помогло исцелиться (heal - recover, get well, be cured, mend - to become sound or healthy again).

Вот и у меня был такой алтарь. Алтарь моей веры. Веры в то, что лекарствами можно вылечить боль от несовершенства (imperfection - flaw, defect, fault, shortcoming - the state of being faulty or incomplete) мира, боль от разрушения (destruction - demolition, annihilation, devastation, ruin - the action or process of causing so much damage to something that it no longer exists or cannot be repaired) веры в разумность (reasonableness - rationality, sanity, sensibleness, logic - the quality of being based on good sense) людей. Алтарь веры в то, что можно исправить таблетками искажения и несправедливости (injustices - unfairness, inequity, wrongs, grievances - lack of fairness or justice) мира, соскальзывание (slipping - sliding, skidding, slithering, gliding - to slide or fall unintentionally) перед последним шагом на выходе из круговорота (cycle - circle, rotation, round, loop - a series of events that are regularly repeated in the same order) зла, непрерывное (continuous - constant, incessant, unending, perpetual - without interruption) сползание (sliding - slipping, slithering, gliding, descending - to move smoothly along a surface) в инферно (inferno - hell, underworld, abyss, perdition - a place or situation that is too hot, chaotic, or terrible, resembling hell), боль, которую люди причиняют друг-другу. Алтарь, куда я приносил свою жертву, чтобы исцелиться.

Да, можно всю эту кучу просто выбросить. Освободить место для других мелочей. Но для меня это напоминание (reminder - memento, souvenir, token, memorial - something that causes someone to remember something).

Напоминание о том, как я шаг за шагом, пробуя избавиться от внутренней боли на самом деле пытался то зеркало, которое отражает мир, завесить то вуалью, то закрыть решеткой, замазать (smear - daub, cover, coat, blur - to coat or mark something messily with a sticky or greasy substance) краской. Пока не понял – эта боль моя, эта моя реакция на мир. Убирая эту боль, я буду отказываться от части меня самого. Да, иногда эта боль бывает почти невыносима. Но именно эта боль заставила меня идти по пути творчества (creativity - inventiveness, imagination, innovation, artistry - the use of imagination or original ideas to create something).

Стану ли я известным писателем? – Вряд ли. Я не занимался писательством с молодых лет, не набирал опыт годами.
Буду ли я от этого страдать? – Возможно, зависть к чужим успехам присуща людям.
Будут ли меня критиковать (criticize - censure, condemn, denounce, find fault with - to indicate the faults of someone or something in a disapproving way)? – Вероятно, у каждого есть своё зеркало, призма (prism - lens, filter, perspective, viewpoint - a medium that distorts, slants, or colors whatever is viewed through it), через которую только и можно видеть мир.
Тогда какой в этом смысл? – Так я могу видеть мир без шор (blinders - blinkers, narrow-mindedness, restrictions, limitations - things that prevent someone from seeing or understanding the full picture), без калейдоскопа, без цветных витражей (stained glass - glass painting, leaded glass, church windows - colored glass arranged to form patterns or pictures), скрывающих уродства (ugliness - disfigurement, deformity, eyesore, monstrosity - the quality of being unpleasant or repulsive in appearance) и не умирать от этого.

Я отдаю свою боль бумаге, магнитным доменам (domains - regions, areas, fields, territories - distinct regions or areas, in computing: mimal magnetic parts in hard disc) на жестком диске или состояниям в электронных ячейках (cells - compartments, units, blocks, locations - the smallest structural and functional unit of an organism or a small compartment) памяти.

Но это могут прочесть другие люди, и увидеть мою слабость? - Да, но и увидеть мою силу в преодолении (overcoming - conquering, surmounting, mastering, defeating - to succeed in dealing with a problem or difficulty). Мой путь.

Боль нужна, чтобы действовать. Отдернуть руку от горячего утюга, перевязать рану от пореза, а не наблюдать как кровь, вместе с жизнью вытекает (flow out - drain, leak, seep, gush - to move or pour out in a stream) из тела.

Заглушая боль, можно не заметить, как внешние обстоятельства действительно стали опасны. Гангрену не вылечить (cure - heal, treat, remedy, restore to health - to relieve a person or animal of the symptoms of a disease or condition) опиумом (opium - narcotic, drug, painkiller, sedative - a reddish-brown heavy-scented addictive drug prepared from the juice of the opium poppy).

Но, если боль такова (is such - is like that, is so, is that great, is that intense - of the type, character, or extent previously indicated or implied), что не можешь действовать? – Используй обезболивающее (painkiller - analgesic, anesthetic, pain reliever, sedative - a drug that relieves pain), только чтобы начать действовать, но не заменяй обезболивающим лечение.

Если болит – лечи, а не заглушай боль. Если больно уйди от источника боли. Вынь (take out - remove, extract, pull out, draw out - to remove something from a place, imperative form) гвоздь из ботинка, если каждый шаг причиняет (causes - inflicts, gives, produces, brings about - to make something happen, typically something unpleasant) боль.
