Глава шестидесятая.

Они сидели на кухне, за окном на город спускался вечер. На плите продолжал гореть огонёк, как в очаге (hearth - fireplace, fireside, inglenook, firepit - the floor of a fireplace, often extending into a room, symbolizing home and warmth), и его призрачный (ghostly - phantom, spectral, eerie, faint - resembling or characteristic of a ghost; faint and elusive) свет становился ярче в наступающих сумерках. Они сидели рядом, упираясь локтями в кухонную тумбу, а щиколотками (ankles - the joint connecting the foot with the leg, talus, tarsus, mortise - the part of the leg where it joins the foot) касаясь друг в друга.

В чашках был чай. Доставка ожидалась не раньше, чем через час. Они оба знали, что будет впереди, но как будто откладывали это на потом.

— Расскажи, как у тебя дела дома? — мягко спросил Сергей, отодвигая (moving away - pushing aside, sliding away, shifting away, pulling away - to move something to a distance from its original position) свою чашку.
Мария оживилась. Она принялась рассказывать о встречах с подругами, о том, как они ходили в кино на какой-то голливудский блокбастер (Hollywood blockbuster - big-budget film, smash hit, summer movie, megahit - a high-budget, major studio film designed for mass appeal and large box-office earnings), а на прошлых выходных — в театр на камерную постановку (chamber production - intimate performance, small-scale staging, studio production, boutique show - a theatrical production designed for a small audience in an intimate space). Говорила она живо, но в её рассказе сквозила какая-то отстранённость (detachment - aloofness, disengagement, remoteness, indifference - a state of being emotionally disconnected or uninvolved), будто она просто пересказывала краткое содержание фильма или книги, а не делилась своими переживаниями. Как будто её чувства молчали во время этих обыденных (ordinary - mundane, everyday, routine, commonplace - with no special or distinctive features; normal), но весёлых и приятных событий. Потом она сама спросила: — А что у тебя тут было? Как ты тут вообще?
Сергей пожал плечами, его ответ был ещё короче: — Работа. В основном работа. Ничего особенного. — Пауза. — Пара встреч с друзьями. Пару раз прогулялся по набережной. Но, главное – встретил тебя... Было непонятно, имел ли он ввиду то, что встретил её на вокзале, или что вообще встретил в своей жизни. Он положил её руку в свою ладонь и накрыл сверху другой рукой.

Чай закончился. В воздухе повисла тишина. Как будто так долго ждавшие встречи, они не знали, чем поделиться друг с другом. И просто смотрели друг на друга.

— Я тебя поцелую. — В словах Сергея не было ни просьбы, ни давления, просто пояснение (explanation - clarification, statement, elucidation, exposition - a statement that makes something clear) или предупреждение.
Мария, которая в этот момент была погружена (immersed - absorbed, engrossed, lost, sunk - to be completely involved in a particular activity or thought) в свои мысли, в созерцательность (contemplativeness - thoughtfulness, reflectiveness, meditativeness, introspection - the state of being deep in thought), перевела взгляд на Сергея, как будто не слыша его слов. Её лицо преобразилось: сначала появилось понимание, потом облегчение и лёгкая улыбка.

Это было не просто, и немного странно — они сидели на табуретах лицом к лицу, их колени упёрлись в края табуретов друг в друга. Но у них получилось. Они пробовали друг друга на вкус, вдыхали аромат волос… И не были разочарованы. Привкус (aftertaste - taste, flavor, hint, tinge - a taste, typically an unpleasant one, remaining in the mouth after eating or drinking something else) чая с лимоном на губах добавлял ностальгический оттенок поцелую, как дежавю.

Смятение (turmoil - confusion, agitation, disarray, upheaval - a state of great disturbance, confusion, or uncertainty) в груди, розовый туман в голове у Марии стали вытесняться напряжением в спине. Край табуретки упёрся в коленную чашечку и лёгкое неудобство в начале, перерастало (growing into - escalating into, developing into, turning into, evolving into - to develop into something more significant, usually negative) в тупую боль.

— Нет! Это невозможно терпеть! – Внезапно, отрываясь от поцелуя сказала Маша.
— Что такое? – Встревожился (became alarmed - grew concerned, got worried, became anxious, was disturbed - to become anxious or worried) Сергей, обдумывая, что он мог сделать не так, стараясь прочитать в лице Марии причину обиды…
— Табуретки слишком твёрдые и не приспособлены (suited - adapted, designed, fitted, intended - to make something suitable for a particular use or purpose) для этого! – наигранно (feignedly - playfully, artificially, affectedly, insincerely - in a way that is deliberately pretended or exaggerated) капризным (capricious - whimsical, petulant, fussy, fickle - given to sudden and unaccountable changes of mood or behavior) тоном произнесла Маша – и демонстративно потёрла колено, которое минуту назад упиралось в край деревянного сиденья табурета Сергея.

— Знаешь что? — спросила Маша. — Давай ты будешь встречать доставку, а я пока пойду в душ. Мне нужно смыть с себя офисный дух.
— Конечно! Тебе что-нибудь нужно? — забеспокоился Сергей. — У меня тут мало всяких вещей. Но есть гель для душа и детский шампунь, я привык мыть голову им. Халата (bathrobe - dressing gown, housecoat, robe, negligee - a loose-fitting garment worn before or after bathing) нет, но у меня есть тёплая рубашка — тебе она будет как короткий халат, хочешь?
— Соблазнительно (tempting - alluring, enticing, inviting, appealing - appealing strongly or seductively), но нет. Мои ловкие руки позаимствовали (borrowed - appropriated, took, commandeered, nabbed - to take and use something belonging to someone else with the intention of returning it) в гостинице халат! — многозначительно играя бровями, низким голосом сказала Мария.
— О нет, в моём доме воровка (thief - robber, pilferer, burglar, kleptomaniac - a person who steals another person's property), какой позор (shame - disgrace, humiliation, embarrassment, scandal - a painful feeling of humiliation or distress caused by wrong or foolish behavior)! — воскликнул Сергей, драматически закрывая лоб рукой. — Мне стоит опасаться за мои драгоценности (valuables - jewels, treasures, precious items, prized possessions - items of great value, especially small personal items), — продолжил он, судорожно ощупывая (feeling - patting, checking, groping, frisking - to touch or explore with the hands to examine something) свои карманы.
— И сердце! Ты украла и моё сердце… – Его голос к концу фразы стал глухим и тихим, и Сергей руками схватился (grabbed - clutched, seized, gripped, held onto - to take hold of something suddenly and firmly) за грудь.
Мария рассмеялась.
— А ты уверен, что правильно выбрал айти в качестве карьеры? Может, тебе стоило быть актёром или поэтом? — полушутя (half-jokingly - jokingly, facetiously, in jest, playfully - partly as a joke; not entirely serious) спросила Мария.
— Я пробовал быть актёром, — серьёзно сказал Сергей. — Но мне не понравилось… А стихи… Ну, я пробовал писать, но это не то, что я бы стал публиковать.
— Вот как?! Никуда не уходи, я должна расспросить тебя подробнее об этом! — воскликнула Мария, как будто Сергей и впрямь мог собраться и уйти куда-то.
И ушла в коридор, где на вешалке висел её пакет.

Проходя из коридора в ванную, Маша заглянула на кухню:
— Кстати, фен я тоже позаимствовала в гостинице! – Мария показала Сергею язык, в знак того, что нисколько не раскаивается (repents - feels remorse, regrets, is sorry, atones - to feel or express sincere regret or remorse about one's wrongdoing) в своём «злодеянии» ("misdeed" - wrongdoing, crime, offense, transgression - an evil or illegal act), и ушла в ванную.

Из ванной послышался шум воды. Сергею показалось, что Маша разговаривает сама с собой, потом стало похоже, что она тихонько напевает. А может быть это приглушенное (muffled - subdued, muted, faint, dulled - a sound that is not loud because it is blocked in some way) журчание (gurgling - bubbling, babbling, burbling, trickling - a low, irregular bubbling sound, like water flowing) воды рождало такие звуковые (auditory - acoustic, sonic, sound-related, hearing-related - relating to sound or the sense of hearing) миражи (mirages - illusions, hallucinations, phantoms, delusions - an optical illusion caused by atmospheric conditions; something that appears real but is not).

В ожидании доставки и Марии Сергей зашёл в комнату, придирчиво (critically - meticulously, fussily, pickily, captiously - in a way that finds fault or is hard to please) оглядел не хитрое убранство.
Всё было по-прежнему, как тогда, когда он уходил сегодня, чтобы погулять с Машей по городу.
